Venous Oedema Management

Supporting Better Circulation and Reducing Swelling

At Supported Body Massage Therapy, we provide specialised care for venous oedema—a chronic swelling condition that occurs when the veins in the legs struggle to return blood efficiently to the heart. This type of oedema often develops as a result of chronic venous insufficiency, where valves in the veins are weakened or damaged, leading to fluid pooling and tissue congestion.

Our clinic works collaboratively as part of your integrative care team, supporting clients alongside wound care nurses, vascular specialists, and GPs. While wound care is managed by qualified wound care nurses, our role focuses on managing the lymphatic and venous components of swelling through safe, evidence-based therapies. We maintain close communication with your healthcare team to ensure continuity of care and the best outcomes for your condition.

Our Approach to Venous Oedema Care

Each client receives a comprehensive assessment to understand contributing factors such as vein health, mobility, medical history, and lifestyle.

Therapies we provide for venous oedema include:

By promoting effective lymphatic and venous return, we aim to reduce swelling, improve comfort and mobility, reduce risk of infection and ulcers, and support tissue healing.

When to Seek Help

You may benefit from venous oedema management if you experience:

  • Persistent swelling that usually appears in the lower legs and ankles, which may worsen throughout the day and improve with elevation.
  • Aching, tiredness, or a heavy feeling in the legs, often relieved by raising the legs.
  • Leg cramps, particularly at night.
  • Skin changes such as, hardening, dry and flaky skin, or discolouration which often shows up as brown or reddish-brown staining, often near the ankles.
  • Restless legs

Early assessment and intervention can significantly reduce the risk of complications such as infection and ulcers, and improve your quality of life.
